Learnt something really interesting today.

I was watching this tv show about training your brain, each week there is a new topic. Some of the topics that have been covered are training, memory, getting rid of stuttering, and fear of spiders. And it was on the fear of spiders show that really related to Pick up and AA. They took pictures of the brain of the girl who had these fears while being exposed to picures of spiders and other things like puppies. And the brain clearly reacted when she was watching spiders.

Here is what i learnt:

Everyone of us has feelings that we have gotten from our ancestors, the feeling part of the brain has been evolved over a long. And a lot of the things that are programmed in to our feeling part of the brain, aren't really functional and rational in the society we live in today. Feelings override common sense.

The part of the brain that controls our feelings, hits the alarm within a 1/10 of a second. The brain makes the body ready to fight or flee. The pulse and breathing increases, the liver starts separating out sugar to give energy, and the muscles contract and stiffen up. The body will give out pheromones that will let people around you know that you are afraid on a subconscious level. People can actually smell fear.

Therapy through being exposed to your fears are the best way of getting rid of them. You have to train your brain to realizing that it's not so dangerous after all. If you decide to run instead of facing them, you only empower the brains belief that there is actually something to be afraid of and make it worse. Think about that the next time you get AA!

After facing your fears enough and being exposed the brain has changed. The rational part of the brain has learnt to control the part that control your feelings. So all of the physical reactions will become smaller and smaller.

In the tv show, there was a girl who almost had an anxiety attack when in the same room as a spider. And the spider was in a closed jar. She started with therapy that involved her being exposed to a spider in a jar, and at the end she was holding a tarantula in her bare hands.

What you can learn from this, face your fears or they will only become worse! I wrote this to inspire all the guys that are really struggling with AA like myself, to show that you have to do it if you are going to be successful. It really cant get any better by not doing anything about it. I for one, am not going to be a failure in life.
