| Been a sporadic lurker on these forums - this is better suited to General Discussion but I can't post there, so here it is.
I work as a bartender, which has advantages and a few disadvantages when it comes to pick-up.
PROS
-People are forced into some amount of interaction with me if they come to my side of the bar. Approach anxiety gone.
-I'm always visible, cavorting with coworkers, joking with customers, getting silly to the cheesy music our place is famous for.
-This particular place is recognized as a bit of a meat market. Single:attached ratio is pretty high. Even if a girl isn't looking to pick up, she'll hardly be incensed at the possibility.
CONS
-I work at a very busy place - I can serve someone several drinks, take their money, give them their change, and move on to the next person in under 60 seconds and my boss likes it that way. The times I take even a few extra seconds to banter with a customer I get a bit antsy about slacking.
-Everyone is booted out when we close, and I stay and clean for 30 minutes. I'd like to bounce to somewhere, pref somewhere quiet nice for talking, and have got a good rapport going, but this gap can sometimes make things awkward.
-More rare than you'd expect, but girls will occasionally try the 'I have boobs, give me and my friends free drinks' routine, sometimes no more subtle than what I just typed. I'm pretty good at recognizing and dodging that, though.
So, no specific question, just wondering what any current or former tenders experience has been. Quick banter/tactics to use while still doing your job, same night hook-ups (or at least escalation), day 2s outside of the bar setting, changing the bartender/customer dynamic, etc.
Cheers from down under,
Seamus
