How do I deal with this situation so I can vow it never happens again?

So if I am ever confronted with this disaster, do I just pull the HB 3 to the side and let her know I am not interested, and shortly after kino and IOIs with HB 8 I give the SOI? Also, how straightforward should my SOI have been in this situation with the strong IOIs she was giving me?

I think you gave the Hb8 to much attention you should have push-pull her. The HB3 situation she saw you and her friend having to much fun as well as the fact that she is the mother hen of her friend.I would have got good with the HB3 first and show her that I was a nice guy so she could force me onto the HB8

1. No, he wasn't direct enough with the hb 8, the hb3 assumed he wasn't taken and decided to step in.

2. Going direct with hb 8 would have sorted this from the start.

3. HB3 was not the mother hen, becuase she wasn't being protective and pushing him out in order to stop the girls from being "picked up"

4. As for indirect advice, THE CLAW! and isolation possibly also some mirroring with hb8 would demonstrate to others around what is going on.
