Often, i get introduced to a group of people (through a friend) and i have a target in mind, but i am not sure how i should approach?

How can i neg the target in a social situation (like a home gathering or dinner) when she is with her friends? It will look very inappropriate as some of her friends might not appreciate it unless i showcase myself as a very social person.

And this is where my problem is. Its just really hard for me to start a conversation with people who i just met... What should i talk about? What if they are not in the mood to socialize?

How should i start my game? Is there a certain routine that could help me approach this situation?
