My problem comes in when the conversations get rolling, they're never big spread conversations involving everyone. The big group kind of talks within its smaller groups.
And it seems regardless of how I try play it, I can never get into my targets mini conversation.

Interrupt their conversation and immediately ask for their advice about something.
After you ask and get some answers just say, "now, what were talking about?"
