THIS IS THE WHY
not THE HOW

if you're lookng for new openers etc.

read on and become wiser

Pleasure/Pain theory

4 stages of Pleasure

• Engagement – initial contact with pleasurable stimulus
• Acceptance – internalising the enjoyment associated with stimulus
• Continuation – resuming with interaction with stimulus to continue establishing the pleasure
• Subsequent Return – returning to contact with stimulus for own enjoyment

Spectrums of pleasure

• Pleasant – Unpleasant
• Relaxed – Tense
• Calm – Excited

Items of pleasure or pain are decided through association NOT the object itself; hence why people can enjoy some stimuli while others feel displeasure.

Association is the main thing
- “I had a good time with him, I should call him”
- “He was kind of boring, I don’t think I’ll call him again”

Pleasure can be split to two sub-areas:

• Liking
• Wanting

Liking is the enjoyment with the interaction of the stimulus itself

Wanting is the urge and need to re-continue the interaction (source of “one-itis”)

These 2 are decided by the subconscious part of the brain, which is responsible for 2/3rds of our thought processes due to the free nature of the sub-conscious and its primal motivations; which means that arguably most of our decisions are governed by emotion and not with reason.

Pain/Pleasure and decisions

Pleasure is what guides our EVERY action. If people seem to work endlessly it’s because for them the pain of failure is more impressionable than the pleasure of working less, make sense?

Pleasure levels are not at the highest when focusing upon the object itself. When the focus is upon the events leading up to it this is when the highest pleasure is obtained, this is why our fingers tingle and our heart races when we meet someone fresh and exciting.

It’s the question that drives us…

If an object is given to you and you are told NOT to open it, the first thing that you want to do is open it. Fact. The opening of the box is not the excitement but the questions leading to it: “Why was I given the box?”, “What’s inside it?”, “Why can’t I open it?”

It’s the question which propels everything. This is exactly why we want what it is we cannot grasp.

Internal questions are a driving force and the thing leading to it should appeal to everyone’s curiosity. When you are gaming, you should be achieving this.
