Some time ago a work colleague of mine was introducing me to an HB9, and asked me in front of her "Do you think she would make a good girlfriend?"
And then added "Well she is beautiful, don't you agree?"

I showed some disinterest at the first comment, but when he threw the second one at me I AFCed out of the conversation.

So, my question then is, what is the best response to such questions?

I want to DHV and show her that I am also screening her (eg. "You may be an HB, but what makes you different from all the other HB's in my life?"

Also, what kind of responses should I avoid as to not supplicate or come off as a beta?

Try using a disqualifier. If she's tall, say you're into short girls, or vice versa. If she's blond, be into brunettes. Whatever you can think of by looking at her. That way it doesn't seem like you're desperate and willing to take anything that comes along.

"yeah, she's cute but she looks a little too innocent"

You should be shooting for something like that. The attitude you need to convey is a false disqualifier. If you simply agree with him, you will telegraph your interest, which is the absolute last thing you want when meeting someone unless you are running a direct opener

There's a chance here that your colleague is into you and is testing you. Think about this very carefully first before you move on . . .

Anyhow . . . I've been "going over the top" a lot lately but I think this is just one of those situations where you can just use a bit of humor to keep them on their toes . . . I don't think this is the time to neg at all . . .

Celteste: (Look surprised) Oh yes, yes . . . she'd make a great girlfriend. You two make a very cute couple. . . very sexy . . .

hb (friend): No! ha ha ha . . blah, blah, blah . . . she's beautiful . . .

C: Well, that's my point. AND . . . YOOOOOOU ARE beautiful. Don't be shy. . .

hb: blah blah blah (something to the tune of no . . wouldn't she make a good girlfriend for you . . )

C: (Just staring at both of them like you're going to eat them for dinner + Doing a police style interrogation) I'm sorry what was that?

hb: blah blah blah

C: So what you're saying is that I should give her a call and ask her out on a date?

But first, you have to figure out which one you want to hit. Don't be wishy washy going this way or that way. Pick one and go for it.
