when a girl is with her friend

I have this problem, very frustrating.

when a hot girl is with her ugly friend:
1) I dont know who to address. for example, I say "so what are you doing here" I look at one of the girls, she doesn't say anything. then I look at the other girl, she might say something. it's too needy. if I am wearing sunglasses so they cant see who I am looking at, it's much easier for me. someone told me ignore the ugly one, act like she doesn't exist. but I feel bad doing that. can I do that?

2) how do I flirt, etc. with the hot girl, without breaking the ugly girl's heart?
one strategy I thought about is to put the fault on the hot girl. for example, I could tell the hot girl "I noticed by the way you were looking at me, your eyes were flirting with me."
this way, it's the ugly girl's fault for not giving me the right signals, not my fault. you know what I mean? I am not choosing between them, one of them gave me the right signal, the other didnt.

what do you think, am I overanalyzing this?
