I am living in cologne and there is the Cologne carnival currently.

I was walking through the crowd at 6pm and I had no idea how to initiate any contact with women. Saying "great costume" is not just lame but also not contributing to a conversation.

Just walking for half an hour I witnessed 4 fights. I presume, talking to the "wrong" woman brings me into a fight.

How do I pick up women in this environment, how do I initiate the first contact, what is different to daygame?

Dude, unless you try to pick up the woman of a turkish clan leader I don't see why it would lead to a fight; plus such places are usually packed with police anyway. Get that mindset fixed.

It's not about what you say, but how you say it. Hell, even "nice costume" might work if said confidently! But OK, if you want to be original, you can always come up with a line related to her costume or ask her a question about it or whatever.
