Is cold approaching/day game bad for college game?

I notice that I sometimes see very good looking girls on campus and I never see them again. Like these girls are not in my class and most of them are not in the organizations I am in. Now I have read that day game and cold approaches are bad for college, what is your opinion on this?

Also, how do I progress with those girls or open a conversation with them?
