There are several ways to tackle this problem. The most effective, but also the most difficult to pull off is the mirror technique. You ruin them as much as they are ruining you. When they realize who their dealing with, they'll be afraid and stop. Just remember though that this requires you to be vigilant, merciless, and CLEVER!
A more practical way of doing things is to leave the place and start life anew.
A third way to do it is to murder these people before they spread the rumours. But I do not recommend it.
