I've walked behind a set and actually opened them indirectly from behind as we were walking. They kind of turned their heads and talked back. Then I walked around the side of them and kept talking and walked with them side-by-side. Don't be afraid to just start walking along with them wherever they are going.
There's actually a strategy called the "attention snap". This means that you have to grab their attention very directly and abruptly. With walking sets, yes, this means jumping in front of them and halting them. I know that when I go to the mall or street fairs, I make sure to keep a steady pace when I know a sales person or pamphlet person is going to pitch me something. I don't have to reject them or even acknowlege them if I can just blow right past them and keep walking. Girls do the same thing to guys. That's why you need to stop them in their tracks in order to force them to give you their full attention and acknowledge your presence.
So yes and no or what?
I'm just telling you strategies that work, you can decide which one to use in a given situation. Technically, according to proper protocol, you should stop them and open them from the front.
