Gambler talks about push-pull in his book Natural Game.
He gave the following lines as examples:
“You’re like my bratty little sister.”
“Do you have hot friends?”
“Would you like me to buy you a drink?”
“You’re too young/old for me.”
“Wow, you ask loads of questions, do you want my resume?”
“You’re a nice girl with bad girl mannerisms.”
“You’re a bad girl with nice girl mannerisms.”
“Your first impression kind of sucked, but actually . . .”
“You’re the coolest girl I’ve talked to . . . in the last fifteen minutes!”
“You’re cool . . . you can help me pick up chicks.”

When do you use lines like these? Early in the interaction? I was talking to a girl who was into me and I couldn't bring myself to use one of these lines - I felt that it would seem quite random and break the rapport (in a bad way).

Don't memorize lines, and don't use lines from other people. Those are merely examples to show you how to work with your environment and the context of an interaction in order to keep things interesting.

You use push pull early in the interaction. It is basically about pushing her away and pulling her in to get her curious and create a fun vibe. It shows non-neediness as you are not seeking approval with every comment. ThInk about all the AFCs so always kiss her ass, they are pulling pulling pulling. Whereas an alpha male with many options would not dot at as he would not care what she thinks in the first place. Pull when you see fit and push when you feel like having a bit of fun.

Pushes: this will never work out between us
You and I will never get along
You're a scientist? You're gonna be the cause of the zombie virus. I can't talk to you. Do you bite or kiss?
Look at those fingernails, you and I could never go rock climbing together, or have any adventures for that matter.

Pulls: you're kinda cool, give me a hug
You're cute
Your first impression sucked, but getting to know you you're actually cool to be around.
It's nice to meet a person who is honest and genuine. Here you deserve an award (hug).
