When ever I'm talking to somebody I start thinking about whether I'm smiling enough, what should I say next, start to think of a follow up question (Does this happen to anyone else?). Eventually the conversation dies because I'm so distracted and caught up in my thoughts.

Does anyone have some advice to stop non-constructive thoughts during a conversation?

I have never found it very useful to try to stop thoughts. The more you try to stop a thought the more you are thinking of it. Your first step is just to accept that these thoughts will pop in your head. The trick is to stop reacting to them. Just let them flow through you and pay no great mind to them. The more you do this, the less they'll pop in your head eventually. But you should neither fight them nor follow them. Just calmly let them pass like a cloud.
