I was not born in America but that's where I grew up. I am of Asian descent and my parents never embraced the American culture. Short story short, I was brought up with limited knowledge on American movies and celebrities.

Sometimes I find it hard to relate with my sets when she asks me if I watched so or so movie. I think this thread will help others too who were not born in America.

I want a list of must know celebrities (doesn't have to be just American)
...and a list of must watch movies.

Please and thank you.

Dude, you'll have to be very specific about your demographics. Different age groups watch different types of movies or listen to different types of music.

You can use the IMDB website to look at movies 10 years back so you can relate, say if the girl is 18 years old now, up to the time when she was 8 years old. No need to watch and remember everything. Just watch the Top 5 hitmakers for each year within the past 10 years.

Next, search for a Wikipedia article of each Top 5 hitmaker for the past 10 years. You'll save time this way. Read the plot summary. So instead of spending some 2 hours for each movie, all you need is some 10 minutes per movie to get the stories right. You can also read about the actors in each movie in Wikipedia. Each movie article will have links to their directors and actors.

Finally, search for a YouTube trailer of each movie and watch these. Each trailer is about 2 to 3 minutes long.

It's critical to know your demographics. Otherwise, you'll be getting info on the top 5 movies every month for the last 10 years. That's 60 movies per year. Five movies per year is just about right if you know what your age group likes to watch.

That's a good start but I mean like classics...like The Godfather. Things that doesn't really matter with demographics. Like everyone should know who the Beatles are kinda thing.

If you want to build solid emotional connection with the girl, you'll have to be very specific about demographics. A hit movie she feels so good about when she was 10 years old will get you laid than talking about Star Wars or The Godfather.

The same goes for songs. A "Your Bird Can Sing" Beetles song won't get you laid with an 18 year old compared with "Your Guardian Angel" from The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

Get it right. Do it the smart way.
