As from my side I differentiate it in the similar way - just look if I have non sexual thoughts about her. If all my thoughts circle around the sex with her then it's just a desire.

all the above makes perfect sense. but there are levels of attachment/affection that are not "love" but go beyond the "hole open for business" level.

for me, I know it's becoming love when I find myself giving "the look". "the look" is essentially staring for a very long time in a girl's eyes thinking how she is the most amazing beautiful perfect flawless creature in the entire universe.

luckily, it's a very very rare occurrence.
