More specifically, one where you don't know many people. What's the best way to bring up conversation with strangers? I tend to get overwhelmed at mass gatherings and don't really know where to start or how to just "jump in" with people...

Usually I just get into the state of mind that I am the host of the house and I am there to make sure everyone is having a good time. Pretty easy, just befriend anyone you see and little connections + confidence will make you the center of attention. By the end of the night you should be aware of most of the people's names.
