Direct openers examples:
Hey I thought you were really cute blablabla...
You can't keep looking at me like that without saying something!
etc.
Indirect openers examples:
Woah did you see that fight outside!?
Hey do you know any good places to get something to eat?
etc.

But i have learned that a direct opener, presented with the right attitude and confidence, is the best way to approach.
Keep in mind though, i would never go up to a girl and say
"ohh, you are the most beautifull girl in here, please give me your number".
You tell her in a discreet way, so you do not come on too strong.

No need to hide your intentions, total waste of time.

Also i prefer going into a set rather than 1 on 1 because that way you can pick up or if, for any reason, it doesn't work out you've made a new group of friends. And ofc you can't go direct into a set without making it awkward for the friends.

I still sometimes use indirect because I do still have a lot of AFCness holding me back and if I am suffering from bad approach anxiety, I find it easier to go indirect for a an approach or two, it's like putting the training wheels back on to steady me.
When starting out I lacked a lot of confidence required for direct openers so I was using indirect until a few successes with that boosted me.
