I was walking with a friend then this girl who knew him said "Hi[my friend]'s friend" and I just said hi back. Kinda awkward.

this other time I was getting lost in my thoughts in the middle of class kinda in zombie-mode because I stayed up all night and then this chick by me was like "why are you so quiet today" and I'm never sure how to respond. It feels like they're trying to find flaws in me to make themselves look better- in the sense of a shit-test, like they're trying to game me.

How do you respond to these scenarios?

They're trying to shit-test you?! Hell no. To me it seems like they're actually very interested in you!!

Next time something like that happens, simply respond back in a positive way, and escalate QUICK. They're initiating the interaction, so they're clearly interested (remember, women who are not interested won't waste their time...).

Do not overthink these scenarios. Assume it's always ON.

This happened to me a long time ago. I was friends with this douche and two girls walked by (I knew one of them and she hugged me):

Other girl: You're cute
Me: (thought she was talking to me) thanks
Douche: Wait, who were you talking to me or him[me].
Other girl: You.
Me: Oh fuck you, skank.

She totally dissed me in front of everyone. Needless to say, it was an awkward conversation. I can't figure out how to handle insults. I can neg girls, but I can't take negs myself.
