I have different personalities depending on what language i am speaking. I moved to Denmark 10 years ago - im fluent. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference comparing me to a native.

nonetheless, I lack confidence when i speak Danish as i automatically put myself in a lower level. My Danish personality is very innocent and sweet - I can get difficulties in expressing my thoughts as I am focusing too much on my pronunciation.

English is the language in my head. I feel so much more confident speaking english - words are just flying out of my mouth. My english personality is more extroverted than my danish.

The problem ---> I met this girl through my danish circles and am forced to use the introverted / shy side of me. It is not going well. I am appearing too cute and innocent.

What to do in a situation like this?

This probably won't be of immediate help but I remember a discussion with a friend a while back that might be of interest.

She is originally Austrian but very few people notice that English is not her native language. Word's flow from her mouth just as quickly and easily as they would from a native English speaker.

She reckoned the day it suddenly clicked was the day she started to "dream" in English. I.e. the thoughts inside her head were in English rather than German. She couldn't tell me whether it was a conscious effort but even though her English was good before, it was at that point when she was suddenly able to actually speak like a native.

When you think of saying something in Danish do you still think about what you want to say in English first and then translate?

Zac

I am translating. my university courses are all in english and classmates international. - therefore the eng language is still a big part of my everyday life - maybe thats why the danish have not click yet :) i need the click fast!

I always felt like i didnt have a genuine personality whenever i spoke danish - maybe this is why!

Thanks for your reply!!

Why bother if you're knowledge of a language isn't perfect. It's you making a fuzz out of it. Girls probably don't care.

You're welcome, although I'm not sure how useful my advice will be in practice!

I guess all you can do is try to speak Danish as much as possible and hopefully it'll come from there...
