I like going direct over anything else...

so how do i go direct to groups?

usually ill just go up and say something like 'hey you all look really interesting and pretty but i wanted to steal your friend for a quick second' but i feel awkward telling them they all look great and that but i only want to talk to your hottest friend... lol

any ideas on how i can make this better or more effective? im sure the others would get a little jealous sometimes?

Going direct with groups is tricky. If it is a mixed set then it is really hard. I think being indirect with the group but direct with the target is your best bet. Open the set with something like "What are you guys celebrating?" Meet everyone and make a good impression. Then start a little conspiracy with the target "You know I really came over here to get a chance to talk to you right?" Then you can start qualifying her with a frame of "were you worth coming over here to talk to". You NEED to handle the obstacles... there is never really any way around that.

A good opener I use for groups is: "Hey guys, you know...I was actually pretty intimidated to come talk to you...but then I realized that you guys are normal...so Hi, my name is_____"

It has worked for me, but again, confidence and body language is also part of the equation.
