as a matter of fact, I was actually talking to her (point behind her - or in a direction where no-one is).

When she turns to look, and is like WTF? who, no one is there? You can say like

"oh that silly girl; she always likes to play hide and seek." or something fun like that. maybe make up some imaginary friend. work with it.

I would be like "Yea I read that one...about Texas Hold'em right? Back about two years ago when that whole card scene was the new fad I kind of fell into it. Not my fault though - when your friends are all taking an interest in something, it just kind of happens." and then roll right into a DHV about how it was a girl at the time who made you or something.
