In regards to #2, looks do certainly play a large role. It captures the attention. But the flaw with this particular observation referenced in your statement is it neglects the 'real' effects of personality. Personality do not shine through a piece of paper or profile. Chemistry that strong personality or intelligence brings to play through actual interaction. So perhaps would one of these females talk to talk to you in the first place and your personality or intelligence show, then you get more girls?
Interestingly enough I tried another 2 experiments with my room mates...sort of to prove a point I had somewhat similar to the OPs.
#1 We decided to just sit at our table and not look at girls, just chat with the people at the table and have a good time. Over the course of an hour and a half, two groups of girls came up to the table and started talking to them...not me. This happens regularly when we are just hanging out so it didn't even really require a test...but that night we were making a point of it.
#2 My buddies and I each took a night to go up to 20 girls. All we would say is "Hey how's your night going?" and smile in a confident way. (We all know confidence is important so we stood tall) The test was to see how the girls responded. The one room mate had 17 girls respond happily and all but one continued the conversation. The second room mate had 16 girls respond happily and 13 continued the conversation. I had 8 girls respond happily, but only 3 of them gave me more than a one word answer before turning away. All we did was say "Hey how's your night going?" and then we left it up to the girls to see if they would contribute to the continuation of the conversation and not just brush us off.
I am 6 feet 230lbs so I'm no GQ, but if you take personality out of the equation a person with looks has much more success. I have no problems going up and starting a conversation if I can say more than hey how's your night going. So personality does play a key and I won't argue that in the least. What I will say though is that looks play a huge roll in how hard you have to work...or how many PUA skills you actually need to implement.
