A man should always pay for dates, no matter what. Youre not trying to buy her because of that. If you play a bit of game and neg her enough, create real attraction plus show her youre not a wuss ... paying the bill will just mean that you can take care of things yourself. Its an act of value/superiority/authority. I would never step down from that level.

Yes it might cost you a bit of money on dates but if you cannot afford it be careful where you take her. In that case stick to coffee/drinks as was previously suggested.
In my case this might also be because of culture, so don't take my word for it.
I only assure you that in southern Europe this thing works perfectly. Just dont be too nice to the girl and the effect of still paying the bill will feel good for both of you.
