Let me rephrase. It may not be "the way to go" but like gizmo said it will most likely lessen the awkward feelings.

Apart from agreeing with what's said above I'll ad a personal rule I apply for myself which is suitable to this situation: "Would I like it when someone would do this with/to me?" It helps with your calibration.

And keep your head up. You've made a mistake like me all do. No biggie.
