the other night me and my friend were at the mall trying a confidence building exercise (saying hi and smiling blah blah) there were no girls around the mall to talk to so we decided to go into a store (target) i saw an employee there that i thought was cute and i tried talking to her. i did a perfectly fine job at making it seem like a normal conversation but that is only because i approached her saying i needed help finding juice. i made her laugh a bit as we walked around looking but i didnt notice any IOI. after a while we gave up looking and thats where it ended.

i am aware that i should be developing my own routine and such instead of asking how others would have done it but i am completely new at this and i was completely stumped on how to change the subject or to keep her talking.

You are right, approaching a girl at her job is not a good idea, specially if you are starting.
If you want to build report you can't ask random questions, this is really really important, next time you approach a girl at her job try to make it quick think that she's working she can't stay for too long with you.
