The quick switch probably seems incongruent and insincere. Peoples material has a flavor that girls pickup on even if they aren't aware of it. As a general rule for me when I run out of things to say it means either I didn't escalate fast enough or it's time to escalate quickly. Chicks are like dudes in the sense that they don't like a lot of talk that doesn't lead anywhere.
