This is an opener I've tried a few times with success, but haven't really gotten anywhere from there:

I sit next to an HB, don't pay her any attention, then pull out several pencils of different colors. I hold out the pencils to her and ask her which one I should use.

She picks one, then I say "are you sure? Because if the lead breaks or if I take bad notes I'm going to blame you." This usually gets a laugh, and from there I introduce myself.

The problem is that I don't really know where to go from there. I've tried to start a tic tac toe game with her during class, but sometimes, they're trying to take all the notes down and don't have time.

I also can't think of any good negs to say. Any ideas?

class rooms are easy to break the ice for me.

I just tell them hi or whats your name and they reply.

Agreed, just ask her name and start small talk.

Some are going to take notes, some are going to take tic-tac-toe.

If she agrees to tic-tac-toe, make her choose the color and then make fun of her when she's losing
"You are so bad at choosing colors it's unbelievable!"
