When we were in Cancun for Spring Break, this one worked a treat, maybe part of it was because we were English and our accents gave us an advantage, who knows..

But one of us would go to a girl 'oh hi, do you mind taking a photo of me and my mates?'

Then after she'd take it say something like 'let's have a look.. nice one! thanks, so where are you from?' and the conversation flowed from there, although I dunno if that'd work on a standard night in a local area. Food for thought.
