I don't think it is necessary at all. You shouldn't need clothes/items to stand out in a crowd, your posture and confidence should show that. To me its like an attention whore, but I know some here live by it. So they can do it their way and I'll do it mine.

I don't think its necissary, but its a part of who I am. I don't wear black nail polish, or feather boas or anything massively over the top, but I've got a nice plaid fedora and I wear nice shirts, not just plain tshirts and a couple rings and I have a few different necklaces (those ones that are mostly wooden and string beads that you get at places like bootlegger) and if it goes with the shirt, I'll throw on a tie. I also like my juggling balls with colour changing LEDs (that's them in my avatar pic). They draw a ton of attention, but I still need to get a small bag that goes with the rest of my outfit, to carry them in.

I agree with Firebird. I live by peacocking, and am an artist of it. But when I put on some casual dress and go out I actually feel the difference in the amount of attention I get. Peacocking gives you the edge over mot men, but it also makes you lazy. While peacocked I don't spend nearly as much time approaching and opening, I also don't spend too much time sparking interest.
Peacocking is a bonus, but ultimately you need to learn to use skills more than props. Skills you have for your whole life, the props won't always be there.

for me peacocking creates some conversation, because i might be wearing something they normally dont see people wearing, so they ask questions, and i give a story along with it
