It's pretty funny and I wondered if it was really true.
The other day I was at a bar and this HB7 was in front of me and from her accent I could tell she was from Australia so I said "Oh my gosh are you from New Zealand?" thinking she would be insulted and she was! It was hilarious. She said "Ugh, do I sound like I'm from New Zealand blah blah blah." After that she wouldn't leave me alone until I ejected myself from the set, but I was pretty entertained because it described the exact sentiment on the FOTC show.
In the rare event you encounter a chick from New Zealand if you open with "Oh my gosh are you from New Zealand?" I'm willing to bet that she will be so impressed that you are not like the million other guys that asked her if she is from Australia that she will start chatting you up.
Also, I live in socal so ymmv.

I am watching "Grindhouse: Death Proof" and right after I posted this topic there was a scene in the movie where a girl is getting shit from her friends for calling her New Zealand friend an Ozzy. So that might be a good neg too. If you know the girl is from New Zealand call her an Ozzy. Personally, I wouldn't though because she probably gets that a lot.

Ask a Canadian if they're American and they get insulted (Typically)
Ask an American if they're Canadian and they almost never get insulted.
and Never ask a New Zealander if they're Australian.. they get pretty annoyed and it IS a warrior culture.. if you're not careful they'll do a Haka at you.
