I've been a lurker more then a contributor but I recently tried an opener that has worked rather well for me.

I open by stating that I need her help with some homework. I make sure I say it and not ASK her for help. The question itself seems to intrique them and make them curious.

I then explain that my company has me taking an interpersonal communications course. The instructor has told us how important first impressions are and that most of us do not realize the first impression we leave with someone. I then explain that we have been given an assignment to find out what sort of first impression we give off.

Since their first thought would be "Why me? Why not ask people you know?" I tell them we can't ask those we know because we are past the first impression stage and most friends would be less truthful to save feelings.

I then ask them to tell me as descriptively as possible what sort of impression they have of me. For those that seem to struggle a bit or are apprehensive, I tell them "Let me give you an example. When I approached you, you looked like somone who....." and I give them my first impression which is also a cold read.

After they have described their impression of me I ask them for feedback on specific area such as hygiene, approachability, confidence, and attractiveness. I've always gotten good responses here which I think also makes them conscious of those good qualities. I weave in interesting stories (DHV), negs and compliments (push pull) and basically any transition I can use to hook them.

Besides being a good opener it truly does give you a chance to get feedback on how you come across to others and makes for great opening practice.

HB: Ok
PUA: Well I need to explain the first impression I give off to people for this class I'm taking (philosophy, pshycology, sociology). So what was the first impression I gave you?

Also, having a pen and notebook with you may be a good idea.

That is how I would work it, I'll field test it tomorrow and If I remember give an update.
