Small City... different approach methods?

So I'm going to a local bar tonight to try and work on a project lol. Anyways my problem is that I live in a smaller city with only about 20-30k ppl. But the problem is I know alot of them because its a small city. Any advice or opening techniques that can help my night be successful

I experienced this while in college, you can potentially use it as being a 'local' and if you do not know anyone you can start talking to them by joking around about how your in a small city and never seen them before, or something like that..
