Says Who? Try it. Approach from behind, stop them but then move a few steps just slightly ahead of them and then continue talking. After you have done this a few times you'd be confident of approaching from behind - the goal is not to look like a stalker
or someone who is trying to stop them from getting to their destination. you can even walk with them as you start the conversation.
