When going off the diving board, everyone says front flips are easier than backflips. The weird thing is, most people can only do front flips.

It's because doing a back flip is so much "scarier", for lack of a better word.

To learn to do one, you don't need a whole lot of technical knowledge. All you need is an absolute committment to throw your momentum backwards, and a willingness to get smacked around for the first few times.

The number one reason people fail, is because they're too scared to throw all their momentum around behind them.

If you make an absolute committment to improving each day, and are willing to get smacked around for a while, there is no way you cannot become good at pickup.

Note: Some people get hurt a lot harder by their failures. If so, I recommend reading either "Awaken the Giant Within", or "The Power of Now" to get some basic techniques on handling pain and negative emotions.

I downloaded an audiobook of The Power of Now and it's hours long of him mumbling slowly and quietly and I simply can't listen to it. Can you give us a synopsis and save us all some valuable time please?

Brief synopsis:

Most of the emotional pain you feel is a result of your EGO, which is the psychological part of you that places huge importance on your power, your reputation, and your possessions.

Transcending your ego leads to enlightenment: however, this proves more difficult for some people because they have abnormally large PAIN BODIES which are the sum of their past emotional experiences that crushed their self-esteem.

If you learn to recognize when your ego/pain body is talking and you aren't, then you ultimately gain much more power over your emotions, and it significantly lessens emotional pain.

Though, honestly, you should probably read the book to gain better explanations of the techniques on how to do this.

I understand the basic concept, can you just give a couple of examples of how to go about doing this / techniques etc. and I'll be good, thanks.

Don't mean to be a buzzkill - but thought I'd clarify for the record - I can backflip on the ground and some of what you say about backflips is not really true. You do need technical knowledge, and they are easier to land then frontflips. Also, the pain of one fall can put you out for years.

I once fell on my nose when training on concrete. It was bad.

I don't think there's really much technique in this...

Focus on the present moment.

That's it. :D

The backflip analogy works very well. Learning a backflip on the ground, you really have to overcome two obstacles. One of them is the technical side - jumping straight up, tucking quickly, and landing. Not extremely difficult to master.

The most difficult part of doing a back flip is getting over the fear. The thought of going backwards, jumping and leaning back into the unknown, committing one hundred percent, and the constant stinging thought of something going wrong.

This is exactly like an approach. The truth is, once you commit, spend some time learning and forcing yourself to devote some time, you do land it, and you realize that it is possible for you to do.

Here is my similar 'Backflips and Game' post I put up a few months ago.

Cheers for the post.

Backflips on the ground, I completely agree with. Kudos on being able to do that, that's pretty sick...

Backflips off the diving board... Well, I've seen people do it with zero technical knowledge and land one. When you do it off the diving board into the water, you just get a painful smack if you mess up. Though if you hit concrete, yeah, you're probably fucked :D
