i've recently been struggling with the use of sarcasm. one of the guru's i really respect says not to use sarcasm because it demonstrates a negative, bitter, defeated mentality.

however, sometimes i've observed people make sarcastic comments, and the group bursts out in laughter. this ability to make the everyone laugh has probably raised the sarcastic commentor's perceived value.

so my recent thinking is that sarcasm is not necessarily bad, but it is risky. if everyone laughs, then it has helped you. if no one laughs, or maybe only one person laughs, then it can lower your perceived value.

what are your thoughts on SARCASM?

There is a difference between sarcasm and irony. If you are not sure, you should stay on the side of irony.

I use sarcasm naturally, that is, I dont use sarcasm, I am just a natural cynic. It seems to work. As long as you smile while you are doing it you are fine!

No, what are YOUR thoughts on sarcasm? Who cares what we think? You are you.

By being yourself, you'll discover your own brand of sarcasm. Trust me.

In what way? Does it kill you or make you evil like in Superman 2?

;)

David DeAngelo says it's great, especially if you over exxagerate on some things and make the girl giggle. Basically you gotta see if it fits your personality and what kind of responses you get most of the time.

I'm sure your favourite guru would say go ahead if he saw that it works for you and you get positive responses. It probably doesn't fit his style. As you advance your game and get more experience, you won't be asking these types of questions anymore cause you'll know the answer on your own. Just keep striving for improvement and everything else will come with time.

sarcasm is the lowest form of wit

there are far better methods for humor, social acceptance or cynicism(whatever you're goal may be), but variety never hurts in any aspect..in fact didn't someone once say its the spice of life : P

People who say this say it because they can't do it. And besides whole stand up comedy routines can be based around sarcasm, some of the best jokes on TV shows such as The Simpsons, Blackadder, Monty Python or Fawlty Towers is based on sarcasm, just as political satire is based on sarcasm towards a politicians idiotic statement.

Actually sarcasm is the best form of wit (or the only form?) if used correctly...
I like to say things completely over the top to where its TOTALLY obvious i'm being funny and no body will believe me. But it's so over the top that there's no way it'd ever be trued and it makes it that much funnier. I don't like to put people down in a negative way like some people do....when doing this

Sarcasm is a kind of ironic neg, but it usually has a sharply cutting, sneering or taunting element to it that generally isn't very attractive. Use it with care. I'd only use sarcasm on a very beautiful HB with an extremely high bitch shield to break through the armor.

Sarcasm in a social group can help the members of the group figure out their social status. For instance, an alpha who uses sarcasm to test reactions from other males in the group may be using it to telegraph dominance and find out who is rivals are (be it subconsciously or otherwise). A weaker male may use sarcasm to try to elevate his social status and/or cut down an established AMOG.

All of this aside, I agree there are better ways to be cock-playful and neg a target than resorting to really harsh language, that is - unless it's really needed to open a tough set.

I use sarcasm all the time, but then again I know how to deliver it right so people don't get offended by it. For those that are against it, watch comedians, especially the mainstream ones. As they use sarcasm a lot in their jokes and get away with it every single time.

I have a sarcastic personality and I have never had a problem with it. As Jurupa mentioned, it is about delivery.

Sarcasm is close to the top for list for wit. You have to be absolutely aware of your surroundings, and employ quick-fire thinking to immediately play off what the other person said.

Yes there is bad sarcasm for example saying "yeah whatever" in an argument.

v.s. good playful/cocky sarcasm like.
Person A says: "think i might wear 2 socks today, its cold"
Person B: "i tend to wear 2 socks everyday"

person A meant 2 pairs of socks, but person B. used good funny sarcasm.

that dialogue actually happened :P i was person B :)

That's not sarcasm, the modern meaning of sarcasm, is usually an ironic hyperbole.

"think I might wear 2 socks today it's cold"

"Oh yeah, it's absolutly freezing out there, I mean it's cause on the roads, and I think I saw a penguin! 5 degree's Celsius! Only the Arctic Tundra could reach that!" - THAT is sarcasm, it is remarably easy to do.
