LONG READ

OK so I finally found something I can share with you guys that might actually be useful instead of leeching from other peoples’ opinions. I’m no mpua but I do get consistently told how well I dress.

I’ve heard that a few guys in the game (mostly the guys who need game the most) have been to see stylists, well this is completely unnecessary. Probably no one here has but I think this post might be useful to some.

It’s better to have 2-3 good outfits than 10 not so good ones. Is it? Well that depends on where you are gaming. If you’re at uni, I’ve learned you need to look your best all the time. If you’re going to get some milk for your Corn Flakes, make sure you look good, because a roll-out-of-bedhead and joggers and uni hoody is not exactly that attractive no matter how good looking you are. Girls often say how much they hate guys who take longer to get ready from them (this is based on my experience, after reading posts these days I expect it to get challenged :) ) but a fair few of my girl friends have said they love it; a guy who grooms well is sexy. Obviously don’t spend hours but make sure you look at least decent.

If you’re mainly gaming in a club then the bold statement is probably best for you if you don’t have that much money, however it doesn’t cost to look good as I will explain in a minute. Work out what is fashionable and buy what you like and suits you. One tip here is to try lots of things on, because what doesn’t look good on the shelf can look entirely different on you. Some will say ‘don’t be a fashion sheep’ but following fashion to a certain extent is great, as long as you’re not following it in minute detail. Think of the leopard print trend with girls, they only have two or three things leopard print max – looking like a complete leopard is not cool!

I’ve also found that like the saying “it’s not what you say, but what you convey” the same goes for clothes; “it’s not what you wear, but how you wear it”. The key here is to accesorise. Girls will open you as you’re different and it gives them something to talk to you about. I’m not saying cowboy hats or any other mystery cheesy peacocking shit but pendants, bracelets, one ear pierced (not me personally), girls bracelets, hats, scarves etc

Any foolish sucka can follow a trend and buy an allsaints printed tee and blend in, but with accessories you can completely make or break a look. At the moment I wear three girl’s bracelets, pearls, fake diamond one and black beads. It gets a lot of comments and sets me apart from the rest. I’ve also got a necklace with a cross on and a scarf that I wear. Attention to detail is great. Another thing is to wear what you LIKE, you wouldn;t believe how many guysdon't do this. Find some brands you like and check there regularly but even other brands can result in a nice piece. Wear what looks good on you, not because it’s a label. A lot of my mates buy things they don’t like because it has a shiny label on the front; this is what sets me apart from everyone. In fact to my knowledge most guys are like this, but I have an obsession with clothes to the extent of a female’s. Still looking good is never a bad thing!

It pays to shop around. The scarf I originally wanted was £45, but in H&M I found a similar one for £5. Even in Primark you can get some good stuff (not often but shopping around will gift you with some cheeky bargains). I’ve been told that the key to “Primark Game” as he calls it is to buy outfits not things individually and mass try things on. Not sure about it as things from there shrink but maybe it’s worth a go. It doesn’t cost to look good these days, with Primark it costs even less!

DO NOT WEAR A SUIT OR A JACKET TO GO CLUBBING. It looks dickish. Some guy was in Yates last week wearing it and approaching girls and I don’t think he got why he was getting blown out, well that’s because he was in a blazer/jacket and it was weird, young people wear tees and polos down town, if you want the young girls you need to dress accordingly. Don’t go to a rock night in helly Hansen/henley’s chavvy shit, it just won’t work no matter how good your game is.

Look at materials and what looks good on you. I am a skinny 6’2” guy so obviously I won’t wear tight stuff as it looks gimpy, a friend of mine with a similar build thinks he looks cool in skinny jeans but everyone can see his legs are thinner than a girl’s. Following fashion blindly is BAD. I wear loose fitting stuff that isn’t baggy but it hides my weediness well. Take inspiration from models too, I always used to think the outfits were to be complete but really you can be inspired by looking at them to create your own styles.

If you’re a huge muscle man wearing tight tees can accentuate that but if you cover it up (the girls i know) girls think it a lot more sexier as you’re not trying to show everyone how ripped you are.

Everyone should probably have at least good pair of jeans, for people in the UK I’d advise a pair of G-Stars, they’ve been in fashion for absolutely years and seem like a classic. Experiment with both T shirts and polos. Pick some brands and follow their styles loosely, the key is to be like them, not to be them, and always have an eye for a bargain. The sales are your best friend. Oh, and if you find a really nice piece of clothing, check out the other colours too! I’ve got four fred perry polos all of the same style but different colours, to me they are just as different as any other piece of clothing.

On the subject of self grooming, DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR HAIR. Even if it’s just small spikes, the fact that you made an effort appeals to girls. If you wear it long, straighten it, it shows you’ve made the effort to look good.

As I said sales are your best friend; know when the sales are. It's no good buying a £50 polo for Christmas only to find it go down to £20 on Christmas Day (as my mam found). Find out when the end of season sale is too, I saved 70£ on some jeans and got them for 40. You can say G Stars are 'out of season' but at the end o the day G Stars are G Stars. Check sites regularly and keep an eye out at your favourite clothes shops nearby. A few shops I'd recommend are Scott's, USC, Republic and Burtons (especially for accessories).

Think I’ve said this and made this clear but in the end, wear what is YOU, not what everyone else wears. A guy who buys only clothes his friend recommends to him will not look good, or stand out. He’ll look average. Looking good makes you stand out and is a massive DHV, so IMO looking good is actually really important.

Hope this helps.

Doesn't this contradict what you just said about wearing what you like and what have you? But either way there are clubs that REQUIRE a jacket or a sports jacket if you want in. And suits, jackets and sport jackets can work quiet well if you know how to use them. I seen guys look good in jacket and sport jackets and guys that look bad in them.

I think what your saying here is to wear fitted clothes? Or are you saying if you are skinny wear baggy clothes?

I know there are guys that think you must do something to your hair. But its better to do what suits you and your look(s).

More importantly know when the seasons are for clothes. Because if you do then you will pretty much know when the sales will be on. I always buy shorts in the winter time as they are always on sale at the place I get them at. Also another place to save money is online. Sign up for the mailing list of online stores so that you get e-mals from them on when they have sales on. You may be amazed at how many sales you can find at online stores, especially now in this economy.

As you get more stuff in your wardrobe, you can mix and match. This exponentially increases the amounts of possible outfits you have.

The best dressed guy at my college (which all the girls obsess over) has tons of nice clothes, suits, etc. I found out after talking to him about it that he gets them all at thrift stores and good will. He then has the fancy clothes tailored, so he pays 50ish dollars for a great looking suit. This strategy is the best I've seen employed to have tons of great outfits. It just takes the time to search Good Will and various stores for hidden treasures.

A good strategy for this is to go to these stores in rich neighborhoods. It increases the quality of what is donated to the store.
Or you can try places like Nordstrom Rack and other outlet stores that sell stuff that are "out of season" and/or stuff that did not sale on the floor. As these places tend to mark down their clothes pretty noticeably.

I suppose it sort of does. The guy in the suit at Yates just looked out of place, so what I really mean is to dress accordingly, whilst still wearing what you like. If jackets are your thing, wear them but DON'T wear them to a rock night, see what I'm saying? I still think Gambler looks like a mug in his suit jacket/blazer thing, but that's just my opinion.

Clothes that fit well yeah, and if you're skinny don't wear skinny jeans that accentuate skinny legs. Not necessarily baggy but I like all saints loose tops at the minute, they're pretty stylish too.

Yeah, still it doesn't hurt to buy a cheap tub of gel/wax and just with your hair for a while and see if you can find something that looks good. It works for a lot of people (not everyone).

Bit of advice to the UK people here, buy your stuff from Ebay USA, i have got a lot of really good stuff from there since discovering it. Well worth the wait because its way way cheaper to buy top quality stuff (Abercrombie, Hollister, Armani Exchange are what i like because they make some real quality).
