Before I explain what happened, I'll ask my question up front: what is the general rule when number closing when other people are around? Literally, people are within earshot or are paying attention to your conversation...

The twist: she's on the job.

I have conflicting thoughts on this. First, if I was a person spectating/listening I'd be impressed to watch some guy get a number in front of other people. I'd hate that I didn't get it, but I'd have respect for that guy (well the old AFC me would).

But, I feel like it puts her on the spot (even if she IS interested). Also, if she's on the job it could get her in trouble... haha I guess I could argue it's a form of customer service...

That's really the question... now you don't have to read on. This explains what happened...

I went into a grocery store, to well, buy groceries... Well I see a girl that I've noticed that works there. I made eye contact and smiled at her while at another cashier's station (she's also a cashier) on a previous trip. So I jump into her line for checkout and I was the only customer in her line (this was good for conversation).

ME: Seems like you're in here everytime I come in here. If I didn't know any better you planned your working schedule so you can stalk me everytime I'm in here...
HER: You're the one that comes in here, I think you're stalking ME
ME: Now you shouldn't flatter yourself... afterall, the customer is always right... (smile/wink)
HER: Hahaha
ME: What's your name?
HER: Blah blah
ME: You go to school around here blah blah?
HER: Yeah. I got to yadda yadda
ME: Well, I'm gonna need you to give me your class schedule so I can continue to stalk you there too...
HER: Hahahaha... (she notices what I'm buying - all healthy foods except for chips and cheese dip - what it's my guilty pleasure after working out...) This isn't really healthy for you ya know?
ME: Yeah, I can't help it... (another man walks in the line) It's just hard when mom doesn't cook for ya anymore

She laughed and so did the man that got in line... he joined in the conversation.. I think the man helped more too because he laughed at my joke and I guess in a way gave me social standings...

MAN: That's why I got married!
HER: Maybe that's you're solution... you should get married (with a big smile).
ME: Whoa whoa whoa! I can't afford to get married right now (I didn't mean salary-wise, but that's how she took it).
HER: Well the double income would help you out...
ME: You're moving way to fast for me! Next you'll be talking about our divorce and splitting our house!
HER and MAN: (laughs)

Here I coulda got her number but didn't... I usually get it when the girl is alone or isolated. But she was at work so I didn't know what rules applied... I've never gotten a number in front of other people either...

Is there a rule to this or should I just went ahead with instinct and gotten it?

I'm not bumping this, but I would like some general guidelines or else I'm gonna pioneer this myself.

I really do have to get some groceries tonight and in case I see her again I'd like a general idea if getting her number is acceptable, in front of other people, and on the job...

But, if no replies I'll let you know what happens when I get her number in front others...
