A vital part of having Inner Game involves possessing an Internal Locus of Control. The AFC, the man who does not achieve success in the dating world, lacks an Internal Locus of Control. Instead, he possesses an External Locus of Control. Let’s define these terms.
Internal Locus of Control: In the field of psychology, this is a mindset that revolves around the belief that the person is in control of his or her own fate. He or she is at cause in the world, not effect.
External Locus of Control: In the field of psychology, this is a mindset that revolves around the belief that the person’s fate is determined by external forces. He or she is at effect in the world, not cause.
Neil Strauss says that "there is no such thing as a bitch." If you are interacting with a woman and she acts bitchy toward you, it is only because you did not calibrate the situation in the best way possible. Learn from the experience and do better next time.
This sort of mindset demonstrates an Internal Locus of Control. The resulting fate – the girl acting bitchy – was determined by factors within your control. An AFC with an External Locus of Control would believe that there was nothing he could do to change the outcome and that the girl he was interacting with had all the power.
In your day to day life, be conscious of how you see the world. Be conscious of what you say to yourself with your inner voice. If you ever catch yourself saying anything that demonstrates an External Locus of Control, reframe and rephrase until you truly feel that you are living with an Internal Locus of Control. You will only be able to move on and learn from this book if you truly believe that you possess the power to change yourself and your fate.
