I've been in an open relationship for 10 years and it's been great. My biggest problem is that quite often, girls I'm picking up will ask if I'm married or have a girlfriend. When they do that, it's game over most of the time unless I lie.

I've been with many girls who were ok with it, but it's always been through a wingman and social proof or after month and months when they get used to the idea. My wingman approach is basically part way through, the wing breaks it to her privately and talks up the benefits of open relationship, and the fact that I chose that life because I didn't want to cheat.

I've been struggling to find a way to tell prospects premptively during a routine or handle the girlfriend question without lying. Anyone have any ideas or experience?

Second, what if you just answer that you're in an open relationship when they ask?

I'd wager that they'd be more OK with it if you build more attraction and sexual tension before they get the chance to ask, too.

Yes, it caught me at the end of a great first date last week and I reflexed and lied. Then I couldn't tell her I lied and just decided after date 2 to end it to make it easy on myself. I guess I shouldn't be afraid to experiment later on in the set if it comes up.
