This is both a cautionary tale and a reassurance.

So basically I infected a girl I'm seeing with herpes. I have never had any symptoms or any reason to believe I have the virus and have only ever slept with one other woman without using a condom and I believed her to be wholesome.

At first I was like "Wtf? How?" and she got all tearful about how I was going to freak out and leave her and how its the worst thing ever etc. But basically, most people who have herpes never develop symptoms or get symptoms so mild that they never get it diagnosed and then their immune system just deals with it and they have no idea they have it. This is what has happened with me and I have taken a blood test, and yes I am infected with herpes.

But when herpes isn't active or "flared up" to use the colloquialism, transmission is pretty unlikely, and I have never had symptoms, but apparently if your immune system is "shedding" the virus unfortunately your sexual partner can catch it. We had drunken unprotected sex on one occasion and I guess luck wasn't in our favour.

So essentially... Get a blood test guys. Because you could have the virus and you could potentially pass it on to someone and they could be the 1 in 4 people that show symptoms when they come into contact with the virus.

It's the stigma associated with herpes rather than the infection itself that cause psychological distress. It lasts a couple of days then it goes away and often will never reoccur, and if it does, each case will be milder than the last. The disease is incurable by any drugs or SPAM, but it does NOT mean your immune system won't eventually subdue it. Chicken pox remains in your system, but no one freaks about that.

Ultimately my point is that it is easy to freak out about something like herpes, since the stigma is so unpleasant. But really, it isn't much of a big deal and is far more common than you think. It's nothing to freak out over or become depressed about, it's a minor skin condition that could flare up occasionally and not anything that should end your sex life as long as you're responsible.

But my main point in this post to guys that are regularly sexually active and have multiple partners, you might have Herpes, so get it checked. I'm sure you're all responsible adults, but yeah, use a condom

EDIT: The knowledge I have gained is from proper medical professionals I've been talking to when I was having a blood test etc. You can trawl the internet and read all sorts of horror stories and "worst case scenarios" but they're mostly shit and/or designed to make it seem a far bigger deal than it actually is.

I just hope this story is reassuring to any guys that have gotten herpes and are freaking about it.

Lesson: Always use protection, both oral and vaginal.

Oral as well? I don't want to live on this planet any more.

It's the safe way. I usually get flavored condoms to make it taste good. I'm not sure if they have ultra thins for oral, but I heard for "eating" that plastic wrap will work fine as well.

I respect that you come forward and admit to something so stigmatized.

However, going in with the attitude that it's no big deal may not be the right mindset. I think it's important to come to terms with it if you happen to already be infected, but like you already said, it is an incurable virus that can make your immune system more susceptible to other diseases.

Unprotected sex can be a slippery slope. You may be able to justify herpes, but what if you had contracted HIV. I'm sure you'd be singing a different tune right now

Gosh, I'd rather not have sex at all than to lick some plastic foil. But, I do take care of my self. I will often ask a potential mate to get tested, I do it too of course, and since I'm not into ONS, it's no biggie.

Fun Fact: Sense doctors know that herpes isn't really a health risk, they don't check for herpes in STD test unless you specifically ask for it.

Herpes isn't a big deal and if you want to fuck a lot of women get used to the idea of having it. Chances are you wont ever show signs anyways.

This. Only the uneducated care about something as insignificant as Herpes. It's like the common cold, except it is only transmitted via bodily fluids instead of other carriers (like air) which make it that much less scary. Furthermore, unlike the common cold, you can only contract it once and once you've had it you won't get it again.

Personally, I am far more worried about the common cold (let's not even mention the flu, that's some proper scary shit) than Herpes.

By the way, I'm not into the 'blame game' but based on your story, it sounds as she infected you.

Herpes isn't a big deal. I don't know that I have it - I assume I don't, but I've slept with 12 women, it's hardly a given. On average, if you sleep with 6 women, you've slept with one with herpes.

And it usually doesn't reoccur after the first year or two. Transmission also becomes much less likely.
