From a boy, you transform into a man once you have your own place. We have guys in my country who already have several kids and yet still live with mom and dad. Guess what? They get cheated on a lot. And they crumble down crying to mommy when they get cheated on.

For those who doubt it if I know what I am talking about, my mom cheated on my dad a lot. We used to live with grandpa and grandma. It isn't only my dad, even his cousin got cheated on. His cousin filed a bigamy and concubinage case against his wife and her lover.

I have likewise met a lot of men who got into the same boat.

On the other hand, I am NOT getting into the same boat so I asserted my independence very early on when I got into college. I worked my butt off to rent and/or eventually buy my own place. It's now free and clear. Hell, I went hungry with no food for several days on several occasions just to have my own place.

As far as I know, I never got cheated on. But of course, you cannot watch women 24 x 7. I would like to think I have minimized my risks several hundredfold and am happy about having my own place.

If I ever had a son, I would charge him rent as soon as he leaves school. Not because I am being cheap, but to teach him a lesson like my father did with me.

When I was a kid a few centuries ago, I used to get jealous of my friends that didn't get charged rent by their parents. As a result I moved out because if I were to pay anyway, I might as well get that independence and get nearer to the clubs were I meet girls.

I have a few friends today who are STILL with their parents due to these 'perks' (they are now in their 30's)

I am now glad my Dad charged me rent to turn me into an independent man. I pity those guys because those same people used to bully me.
