Never ask a woman this, on all these women they flipped out and changed subject.

How old where they (around) and how early on in the conversation did you ask it? Because I can't see them getting that angry if you've k-closed already.

I am new to terms, K term would be nice to know.

No, I asked them about being alone, if they needed protection etc.. Should get a dog/gun. I asked one or two to the gun range to learn how to shoot with me, got very offended when I asked "DO YOU LIVE ALONE"

They around 23-26.

Dude to give you a honest impression of how this might come across I think you have to ask yourself what context they may see this as.
DO YOU LIVE ALONE?
She might be thinking that you’re some stalker weirdo pruning her if its only early into the conversation.
If you have some investment in her and you’ve develop some rapport with the girl and suddenly sand bag her with a question like that she might think sex is your motive and her anti-slut defence would go up possibility sabotaging your outcome of the interaction.
I personally think you were heading in the right direction with the question in terms of context; just you did it the other way around. I would lead with the context first by making a positive assumption about her which would be conceived as a complement which then leads to the question.

Example:

“You know, you seem to me to be a very sensible person, I bet you don’t even live alone and have a guard dog that attacks the newspaper delivery guy each morning.”

That’s just one example, but it’s hard to recommend how to phrase it without knowing in what context of the conversation you were talking to her in and what she had said before you said it.

But sugar coating iffy topics always makes the medicine go down a bit better. Also remember how you say it makes a big difference, so looking at my example you would say it with jest and with a smile on your face so the context of the question would be reinforced by your body language.
