how to mix time constraint with mid game?

I just came hot fresh off reading the game and I've done a bit of searching around but I think I'm missing something: how do I give myself a time constraint and then reenter a group? For example if I opened with the jealous girlfriend and said something along the lines of this: "Hey I need a female opinion on something but I can only stay a minute; I have to get back to my friends" then how would I get back in and try other routines? Thanks in advance for anyone's time.
