I get wayyyy too serious during sets. I'm an intelligent guy, and I go into smart guy/serious mode, which is funny because I'm not that way around my friends and work, but when I get in set I am awful. Do I just need more exposure until I am comfortable with new people, or should I be doing something differently?

It's because you don't realize you can be yourself and be silly. You're falling into the trap of "how do I impress her?"

If you're serious, it will make girls feel uncomfortable. They just want a crackhead who can be himself, not the wise physicist.

Here's your mission: During the middle of your next set, tell her to touch your nipples. Lol. Pretend like you don't know any better, like those confident crackheads.

I'm not saying girl are attracted to stupid guys. I'm saying that smart people can sometimes think they have to do too much to impress the girl.

That should take a load off of your shoulders.

Pickup is right. Girls go out to have fun, not have deep philosophical conversations, at least not yet. You need to loosen yourself a bit and just have fun. Push yourself out of your comfort zone if you have to and do something different.

Your state should always be just a notch above the energy of the set, imo. Girls like the fun friendly vibe typically esp in a club. Seriousness, is never something I would advocate but it could work more at a bar where u might be more likely to have a semi-intelligent convo over drinks. So yea make sure u have a good pregame so you can go out so you can easily get into state. That will loosen you up, ease the seriousness. Never forget, a big part of pickup is simply having fun.
