In my book I talk about the several of the most common types of humor to help you find your style of humor to best apply to your game. Using humor that is not your brand of humor, among other things, is one of the big reasons guys fail in the field.

Today I want to talk about another big problem concerning humor specifically. That problem is NERD JOKES. Most guys, especially new guys are guilty of using nerd jokes in a regular setting only to have their humor fall flat and have the women thinking they are weird.

So, what is a nerd joke?

A nerd joke is anything that requires specific knowledge of the context of the joke’s subject matter before the person can find said joke funny. Maybe you like video games and have constructed an entire routine around video games. So, you tell a WOW (World of Warcraft) joke, but she doesn’t understand your punch line because she knows nothing about video games, let alone WOW. Then you make things ten times worse by trying to explain your joke to her after you have already lost her interest. Not good.

Here is an example of a nerd joke that you will only get if you’re a chemistry nerd.

Nerd Joke: Two men walk into a bar. The first man says, “I’ll have some H20.” The second man says, “I’ll have some H20 too.” The second man dies. Lol.

Explanation: If you were a chemistry nerd you would know H202 is Hydrogen Peroxide, which if consumed will/can kill a person.

The Key to telling a good joke, as far as subject matter is concerned, is universal appeal and common knowledge. Here is a universally funny joke, which has been called “The World’s Funniest Joke” based on research done by Richard Wiseman.

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services.

He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?"

The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead."

There is a silence, and then a gunshot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says "OK, now what?"

Why is this joke funny?

Almost everyone can relate to the literal misinterpretation the caller experiences and thus we find it funny.

Okay, so now you know what sets a regular joke apart from a nerd joke, but what do you do if ALL of your material consists of nerd jokes?

Well, you can either change it all, while reserving your nerd jokes for the chance occurrence of actually meeting a fellow nerd out at the bar/club/wherever, or you can start practicing niche seduction. Niche seduction is another thing I talk about and it can basically be boiled down to: Go where other people who share your interests gather, rather than a bar or a club.

I think you're missing the point.

All he is saying is that you have to be sure that your audience will have an understanding of the joke. Everybody has had some communication so you can be sure that they can relate to it.

However what he refers to as a "nerd joke" here is a joke with a more specific context that a much narrower audience would understand.

I will say though i'm not fond of the term "nerd joke" as these more specific jokes are often much more humorous as long as you know that the target will understand the humor.

the internet is amazing for jokes. But if you have solid game, you dont need standard jokes at all. situational cocky funny or push pull tactics would do just fine to provide comedic relief in any situation.

But i agree with the essence of what you are saying, go places where you will feel more comfortable so that you may be more successful... completely agree with this ->

thought you were talking about pickin up women and not dealing with her guy friends... unless that your thing if so i have no problem with that, my cousin is gay and he's still mad chill. but i find that dealing with dudes who are also trying to get chicks is just tell them a crazy (drunk) story about one of your conquests/adventures and they will laugh and like you for the rest of the night. cheers

I am talking about meeting women for the most part. Although, you're not going to be talking to women all night. Stories are fine assuming they fit into the context of what's being discussed. If you're just busting out a crazy (drunk) story to win over a guy you feel you need to "deal with" it is weird...and a little sad.

Cocky funny has its share of problems as well.

not trying to start anything but how is it weird or sad? men between the ages of 18-25 mostly talk about beer, football and sex. mostly bullshit if you ask me but i dont find it sad or weird, i find it smart to entertain the other male friends with a story that they would enjoy listening to. i dont need to shut them out or treat them shitty (amog tactics) if i can co-exist with them and we can both be successful, more power to me. its the brocode dude. lets all be successful even if they other dude is not a pua.

The key word is context. Stories shouldn't be unsolicited or unrelated to the conversation you are having with a group. Otherwise it starts heading into the realm of, "This one time a band camp..."
