So I met this girl at a friend's house party. She came from a different city to stay the night over at her friend's. I approached her quickly and think build up rapport pretty soon. We talked for the most of the party, ocasionally we would be in a group or she and I would talk to someone else briefly but we spent the most time talking. She was fun and hot and I think I was leading the conversation and she enjoyed it. At some point i tried to create a theme (teasing her about her psychology studies - as she was analyzing everyone; though that didn't work that well). My problem was taking it to the next level. I didn't find the right point to start kino escalation.

There were two main obstacles that night:

At some point, my friend (who knew her) noticed I was interested in her so he came by trying to help me out by telling her "you might wanna know he's actually single sice recently  " - right in front of us. That was an awkward moment. Eventually she asked me about my ex which made me stumble a little. I wasn't really prepared for that so I just told her some general things ("after three years, you know, it just did not seem right anymore blah blah blah so i broke up..."). I basically cut that topic off.

So my first question is: Was my friend's move actually helpful? Is there a way i could have reacted more smoothly and turn it to my advantage?

Now that brings me to my second question: Is it helpful to talk about past relationships in general? And if yes, how detailed should you be? I didn't want to bore her with my shit, at the same time i tried to play it cool so I wouldn't make her feel like a random target of a guy who just ended a relationship.

The other obstacle was my own insecurity when it came to escalate things. I was thinking a lot about IOIs. At some point she mentioned that she likes to have fun with younger guys (i am a little younger). Later on she asked me at least two times how far it is for me to go to my place (not very far). And then I wondered if her questions about my past relationship itself was an IOI.

In total I had a lot of fun with her but I am still wondering if I could have gotten more out of that night. She seemed like the type of girl who doesn't have a problem with spontaneous hookups but can be also fine with just a nice conversation. I wonder if should give myself the credit that she didn't lose interest in talking to me (I was one of the last guests to leave) or if she was just happy to have someone to talk to (as she also didn't know too many people at the party).

Looking foward to your opinions!
