I think you did pretty well. It seemed to be going pretty poorly but you made her qualify herself to you and I think that really was a big step in turning things around a little. Did you end the conversation here? If so, in future extend the post #close interaction a little

I said i'd be right back went and got a drink came back ten minutes later and I could tell she'd managed to compose herself a bit and she was back to playing the head games. instead of "almost" say: "a bf? nope."
the response is almost always "no! i meant do you have a girlfriend!" just a quick tip, but it gives them that extra bit of chasing you, which is the way you want things to be

yeah you're right. The almost was a mistake, at the time I meant it as 'you (her) we're nearly the bf' ie. it was a lucky escape for me, but that was rubbish and didn't really come across.
