Mass media, public perception, peer pressure, all this moulds people from an early age. It is extremely hard to resist this for 99 out of 100 persons. Thus it becomes harder and harder to find persons to build deep and loyal connections. Subcultures have already been commercialized (for instance the Che Guevara shirt is no longer a symbol of rebellion but foremost of fashion). The moment you say: "I'm not gonna wear a watch because I want to give off the signal I do not wish to conform." you allow yourself to be determined by the main culture and form a new conformism.

Yes, it is so.
But
the harder is situation the more interest to win. Subcultures must be new; old subculture is culture, just a new face of conformism In Russia the same problems are.
