So why am I having so much trouble with a kiss close?

You might be jumping the shark when it comes to kiss closing.
Look really close (and sensually not awkwardly) and say "I really like these earrings" and rub her ear. Then lean back and talk to her some more. Then whisper something in her ear etc
Try to get closer and closer to her face without kissing her - if you see compliance or no hesistation/ she likes it - then go for it.
Or do the tic-tac game:
Pull out some tic tacs (Or gum) and offer her one (You can neg her and say "Well you need one your breath is kicking lol
" )
When she takes it, give it to her in her mouth with the tictac/ gum on your index finger/ thumb and make sure part of your finger slides in her mouth.
If she likes it - kiss her.
